World War II left deep wounds both on the land of Luninets and in the souls of people. During the years of occupation, about 17,000 people were shot in the city of Luninets and settlements of the district, more than 3,000 captured soldiers and officers of the Red Army were tortured in death camps, and about 2,500 people were forcibly deported to Germany. 5,364 residents died in Luninets, including 4,244 Jews.
